How Diabetes Private Medical Insurance Policies Work

As someone with diabetes, it can be difficult to find private medical insurance to suit your needs. You will only be able to get cover for conditions not related to your diabetes. However, private health insurance is still a wise investment, but wouldn’t it be nice if you could get some benefit from managing your diabetes, and some help with doing so too?

PruHealth is the award winning health insurance that not only offers top quality cover, but rewards you for healthy living. They can also help you manage your condition through their VitalityMed programme, and they offer great discounts including gym membership where the more you go the more you save.

Here’s how it works. With PruHealth’s unique Vitality programme, you earn Vitality Points for activities such as going for a health screen, visiting the gym, taking a free fitness test and quitting smoking. You can also earn points for everyday exercise, such as going for a walk, using a Fitbug pedometer (rrp £84. PruHealth price £15). Depending on the number of points you earn, you have the opportunity to increase your Vitality Status and reduce your premiums each year.

If you don’t claim you could receive a 25% discount, but that could increase to 50, 75 or even 100% of this year’s premium off next year’s cover, with enough effort through the year.

And because you have diabetes, you can register for VitalityMed which means you get more Vitality Points for a number of activities than someone without a chronic condition, helping you to move up the status levels more quickly.

Not only that, but PruHealth also offer discounts with their Vitality partners, including gym membership, health screenings and smoking cessation sessions, making it easier for you to take care of yourself. For example, you could get a full health screening (rrp £400-500 dependant on provider) from £250 as a Bronze member, and as little as £25 by achieving Platinum status. PruHealth gym membership at Cannons or LA Fitness costs £25 per month for the first 3 months (£25 activation fee required) but if you go twice a week or more, you could pay nothing for subsequent months!

Please note that as diabetes is a chronic condition, requiring ongoing medical care, any routine consultations for monitoring the condition, along with medication, aren't covered by PruHealth.

In addition, your diabetes will be classed as a pre-existing condition, in that you have had advice, treatment or diagnosis for it before taking out health insurance. This means that an exclusion for diabetes will be applied to your policy and therefore cover towards the cost of treatment for diabetes and its related conditions, such as eye problems and circulatory problems, won't be available.

Please see the list of what is covered, and what is not covered, for more information.

Nevertheless, with all the additional benefits of PruHealth cover, both for the individual, the couple or the family and the support for managing your condition, private medical insurance with PruHealth is really worth considering.
