Diabetes in Not Just an Epidemic in the West

Mon, 21 Nov 2011

The number of overweight children in Turkey is now almost 2 million.

In the last eight years, obesity in children went up from 5 percent to 10.5 percent.

These obese children are at high risk of becoming diabetic. Each year approximately 2,000 children are diagnosed diabetic.

The obesity rates amongst 6-16 year olds in Turkey have increased from 5 per cent to 10.5 per cent in only eight years.

16 per cent of the children of this age group belong to families who are in the highest income bracket.

This equates to 1 out of every 10 children being extremely overweight.

The country has 17,000 diabetic children.

Diabetic children need their blood sugar levels checking four times a day and could well receive insulin injections up to four times a day, dependent on the test results.

Serious diabetes related problems could result if the diabetic child does not find food at school to meet his or her diabetic needs, should the environment not support the administering of insulin shots, without instant intervention their blood sugar levels could drop, and other children as well as and teachers do not treat the situation with empathy.
