There has been an eleven per cent increase in diabetes cases within a year, which has meant Blaenau Gwent retaining the top position on the diabetes table.
The health charity Diabetes UK Cymru showed that 531 people were informed that they are diabetic during the past year, which brings the figure for diabetics to 4,755 people in Blaenau Gwent.
For the third year running this area in Wales has the most diabetics, with approximately 1 in 16 people, or 6.5 per cent of the population, living with diabetes.
That contrasts dramatically with 1 in 24 people, or 3.9 per cent, of the population being diagnosed with diabetes in Cardiff, which has the lowest percentage of people living with the condition in Wales.
Approximately 90 per cent of diabetics have type 2 diabetes in Blaenau Gwen, which is often connected to being overweight and having excess abdominal fat.
More needs to be done to help people understand the dangers of an unhealthy lifestyle and to highlight the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle and a balanced diet in reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes .
