Prevention is always known to be better than the cure. In terms of diabetes awareness Tamil Nadu is on the right path.
The state ranks high in diabetes awareness, according to a nationwide study.
The survey highlighted that more diabetics in Tamil Nadu were aware that they were diabetic, in contrast to those in Maharashtra or Jharkhand.
For every seven newly detected cases in the state, there were 10 known cases.
The Indian Council of Medical Research-India Diabetes (ICMR-INDIAB ) study, collected data from 16,000 people in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand and Chandigarh.
The survey emphasised that the total number of diabetics in India amounted to 62.4 million.
It is thought that more cases of diabetes are picked up in Tamil Nadu as a result of its proactive health service system.
This reflects in the vast number of screenings and health camps which are undertaken throughout the state.
Just over 10.4% or 480,000 are diabetic .
The state of Tamil Nadu has recorded the lowest number of pre-diabetics or individuals at high risk of diabetes.
India itself has 77.2 million pre-diabetics which may very well be the reason why there has been an exponential increase in the number of diabetics in the sub continent in the last decade.
