Fitness Crucial for Diabetics

Thu, 29 Mar 2012

Fitness almost halves the risk of loss of mobility in overweight or obese type 2 diabetic adults.

This is the finding of a recent study from the Look AHEAD (Action for Health in Diabetes) trial.

The study was designed to pinpoint the long-term effects of intentional weight loss on the risk of developing cardiovascular disease in overweight and obese individuals with type 2 diabetes.

These findings are of paramount importance as they emphasise the need to enhance our health, thereby keeping type 2 at bay and lowering rates of disability in those with type 2 diabetes .

For the purposes of the study which began in 2001, 5,145 participants were allocated an intensive lifestyle intervention group (ILI) or a diabetes support and education group (DSE).

Participants in the first group needed to attend meetings to achieve and maintain weight loss by reducing their calorie intake and increase their level of physical activity. The DSE group attended three meetings annually which provided general education regarding exercise, diet and social support.

Over the four years of the study, ILI group participants experienced a 48 percent decrease in mobility-related disability in contrast to the DSE group.
