50 Per Cent of British Men will be Obese by 2040

Fri, 11 May 2012

In 1993 the European Congress on Obesity reported that 10 per cent of English men aged between 18 and 40 were obese . This figure has now increased to 20 per cent.

Should something radical not be done, this figure will rise to 50 per cent of young men being obese by 2040.

Similarly, the percentage of obese women aged between 18 and 40 in 1993 was 12 per cent, the current figure being 21 per cent, with it anticipated to rise to 40 per cent.

This situation is entirely preventable. Obesity is a self afflicted condition due to our ever increasing sedentary lifestyles, poor diets and lack of exercise .

Should these rates increase as forecast, approximately two thirds of all adults will develop type 2 in the UK by 2040.

The healthcare bill for treating obesity-related illnesses, including type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease and breast cancer, is likely to be more than £320 billion by 2040.

It is vital that as a nation we adopt healthy eating, exercise more and generally become more active.
