Number of American Diabetic Teenagers Soars

Wed, 30 May 2012

Almost a quarter of American children and teenagers are in the process of developing type 2 diabetes or are already diabetic .

This latest study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention highlights how as well as other metabolic conditions are spreading more rapidly among young people and are harder to treat than in diabetic adults.

Moreover, the study uncovered that over 50 per cent of overweight and obese teenagers had a minimum of one risk factor for cardiovascular disease such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure .

Pre-diabetes and diabetes have increased more quickly than other lifestyle-related diseases among adolescents.

This has been very surprising given that obesity has been levelling off.

"Pre-diabetes" is a term that refers to higher than normal blood sugar levels and the potential to develop type 2 diabetes as well as other risks factors for stroke, heart disease and kidney disease.

Even thinner children are affected as 37 percent of them have a minimum of one heart risk factor.

This is due to the fact that may children, whether they are overweight or not, are also eating high fat and high sugar diets .
